During the intermediate tyre runs it had been Mercedes AMG who looked the class of the field as their drivers topped the timesheets, but end result not showing that, Nico Rosberg ended up seventh and Lewis Hamilton down in 16th. The final flurry of times came when enough of a dry line appeared for slicks to be used, but conditions remained tricky off-line and Maldonado dropped his Williams at Turn 3, hitting the wall at Turn 4 head-on to wipe the front end off his car.
Jules Bianchi’s session came to an early end when he went off at turn three and stopped in the escape road. Adrian Sutil also lost control of his Force India at the exit of the turn ten hairpin but kept it out of the barriers.

Fernando Alonso narrowly beat Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes to the fastest time in Friday practice for the Canadian Grand Prix. A totally dry afternoon session allowed teams to get on with the work stymied by morning rain, including testing the development Pirelli tyres, modified to try to eliminate recent delamination issues.Romain Grosjean was third fastest for Lotus, 0.265s off Alonso, and ahead of Red Bull's Mark Webber in fourth, who set his time slightly earlier in the session than the three drivers ahead of him. Nico Rosberg was fifth fastest in the second Mercedes and fractionally quicker than Felipe Massa and Sebastian Vettel in sixth and seventh. Vettel was one of the first to switch to the super-softs and did not hook up a clean lap at any point, suggesting there is more time to be found from his Red Bull.
Adrian Sutil put his Force India eighth. Jenson Button had to stop slightly early in his McLaren due to gearbox sensor issues. He was still ninth quickest, sandwiched by Adrian Sutil's Force India and Daniel Ricciardo's Toro Rosso. Paul di Resta also ran into mechanical trouble, a fuel feed problem on his Force India leaving him sat idle in the garage.
