2011 MONACO GP: VETTEL SCORES HIS MAIDEN POLE IN MONTE CARLO

Vettel scores his maiden Pole in Monaco
Sebastian Vettel claimed the 20th pole position of his Formula 1 career, but maiden in Monte Carlo after going fastest in Qualifying session that was interrupted by a heavy accident for Sergio Perez. He set time of 1m13.556s in middle of Q3 session and was enough to give him the top spot by 0.441 seconds from Jenson Button's McLaren.

Sergio Perez crash overshadowed qualifying. Young Mexican ran a touch wide exiting the tunnel and lost the rear of the car under braking for the Nouvelle Chicane. Similar to Nico Rosberg earlier in the day he hit the barrier on the right and was just a passenger as the car continued down the hill. Unfortunately for Perez the car turned 90 degrees and ploughed side-on in to the barrier at the bottom, as he instinctively lifted his hands to his head before impact.

Mark Webber will start third as the red flag caused by Perez restricted Lewis Hamilton to just one late flying lap once the session restarted, meaning he will start seventh alongside Nico Rosberg. Fernando Alonso, Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa will start the race from fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively, with Pastor Maldonado ninth and Perez - if fit - tenth.

Vitantonio Liuzzi sat out the session following his crash late in final practice, while Narain Karthikeyan had a rear suspension problem that couldn't be fixed in time either, but the FIA stewards granted them both places on the grid.
