Mark Webber and Red Bull made the perfect start to the 2011 season by going fastest in first free practice for the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. As many predicted, the Red Bull looked quick with Mark Webber near second fastest of Fernando Alonso's Ferrari. However, the times should not be taken too literally as fuel loads are completely unknown and the drivers drove only on hard tyres, saving their set of softs for the second session. The tyres look likely to play a major part in Race as drivers experienced pretty serious wear, with chunks of rubber shedding from the surface. Vettel's first set looked in particularly bad shape after 16 laps of running, but the Pirellis should have an easier time once the track surface has been rubbered in and temperatures increase over the course of the weekend.

Jenson Button and McLaren led the way at the end of second practice at the Australian Grand Prix, as the car's upgrade package appeared to pay off. But whether Red Bull and Ferrari were pushing quite as hard remains to be seen, as Fernando Alonso finished third fastest, and Vettel was fourth. As always in Friday practice, fuel loads remain a mystery and the times are far from conclusive. The Red Bull certainly looks more stable over Albert Park's bumpy surface and Ferrari often saved their best until Saturday practice.
