Willis left Red Bull

.
Red Bull Racing's technical director Geoff Willis has left the team.

Just a few weeks after Willis was present at Silverstone as major upgrades helped Red Bull deliver a one-two result that put the team back in the title hunt, the team confirmed on Thursday that he had departed.

A team spokeswoman said that Willis had left the team as "his job had become redundant".

Willis joined Red Bull in mid-2007, renewing a partnership with Adrian Newey that had begun when both had worked at first Leyton House, then Williams, in the 1990s.

After Newey left Williams for McLaren in 1997, Willis assumed leadership of the design team alongside Gavin Fisher.

He switched to BAR in 2001, but parted company with the team - which had by that time become Honda - halfway through 2006, spending a year on the sidelines before returning with Red Bull.
